How to Become a Travel Agent With No Experience

First, here's what the job really is

Most of our Navigators had never worked in travel before they joined us. Teachers. Nurses. Accountants. Stay-at-home parents. People who were already planning every trip for their whole family and thought, maybe I could do this for a living.

If that's you, here's my honest answer. You can, and let me walk you through it.

A travel agent plans and books vacations. Cruises, resorts, Disney and Universal trips, tours. The suppliers pay your commission, not your clients. You don't need a degree, and you don't need experience. You need to be organized, love people, and be willing to learn.

Now I'll be straight with you about the hard part. This is a real business, not a hobby that pays. Our join page says growth usually starts around the 6-month mark, after training. The good news? The people who make it aren't superhuman. They're self-starters who show up consistently. That's it. That's the whole secret.

Second, join a host agency with real training

And this matters more than anything else. Here's the not-so-fun part. You can't just start booking trips on your own. You need accreditation, supplier relationships, booking tools, and errors-and-omissions insurance. That sounds like a lot, and it is.

Here's the good part. A host agency gives you every bit of that. Ours gives you Navigator's University, our full training program. A real mentor, one on one. And a community on Discord where you can ask anything, any day, and get an answer from someone who's been exactly where you are.

A quick word of protection, because I care about who you trust with your money. Walk away from anyone promising passive income. Walk away from anyone whose pitch is recruiting other agents instead of booking travel. Walk away from anyone who won't tell you their fees clearly. Those red flags never change, and I'd rather you hear it from me than learn it the expensive way.

Third, do the training and get certified

It takes a few weeks to a few months depending on your schedule. You'll learn the booking platforms, supplier programs like Disney's College of Knowledge and the cruise line academies, and how to take care of clients the right way. And you won't do any of it alone. Your mentor walks with you through the whole thing.

Fourth, start booking with your new family behind you

Your first bookings will probably be friends and family. That's how nearly every agent starts, and there's nothing wrong with it. Here's what I love about our team. When something goes sideways on booking number three, and something will, you've got real people to call. Not a ticket system. People who know your name.

How long does it take

Training is a few weeks to a few months. Your first commission check usually lands 3 to 9 months in, because commissions pay after the traveler completes the trip. Full-time income is realistic in 1 to 2 years for consistent part-timers. I know because I've watched our advisors live it.

Questions I hear all the time

Do I need experience to become a travel agent?
No. Most new advisors across the industry come from outside travel. Heart and hustle matter more than background. Training and mentorship cover the rest.

Can I do this part-time?
Yes. Most of our Navigators started part-time. We ask for 20 hours a week minimum, and most people build it right alongside everything else going on in their lives.

How much does it cost to start?
It varies by agency. With us it's $275 upfront, covering onboarding, email, training, your bio page, and support, plus $50 for the Florida Seller of Travel license paid straight to the state. Anyone charging thousands upfront should make you pause.

Is this an MLM?
A legitimate host agency pays you for booking travel. Period. If an "agency" pays you for recruiting other agents, that's not us, and you should walk away.

If this sounds like you, we'd genuinely love to meet you. Learn about becoming a Vacation Navigator with Somewhere Beyond Vacations. No experience required. Training, mentorship, and a family included.
