Disney's New Cruise Ship Venture in Japan Explained

Japan has long been enchanted by Disney magic, boasting the first Disneyland outside the U.S. in Tokyo. Recently, Disney and Oriental Land Co., Ltd. (OLC) announced a groundbreaking agreement to introduce a year-round Disney cruise ship to Japan by early 2029.

This partnership marks a new chapter in Disney and OLC's 40-year relationship, extending the enchantment of Tokyo Disney Resort to the high seas. The new Disney cruise ship will offer Japanese fans and global visitors alike an unparalleled experience of Disney entertainment, world-class dining, and exceptional guest service during magical voyages.

“Disney Cruise Line is expanding its horizons to bring the wonder of Disney vacations to more guests worldwide,” said Josh D’Amaro, chairman of Disney Experiences. “We're thrilled to work with Oriental Land Co. to introduce another uniquely Disney vacation experience to families and fans in Japan.”

“I am proud that Disney and Oriental Land will collaborate to create a premier cruise business in Japan,” said Yumiko Takano, representative director, chairperson, and CEO of OLC. “Drawing from our theme park expertise, Oriental Land will deliver unforgettable family entertainment and cruise experiences filled with inspiration and surprises.”

The new Disney cruise ship, built at Meyer Werft shipyard in Papenburg, Germany, and designed by Walt Disney Imagineering, will be a sister ship to Disney Wish. Tailored for Japanese guests, it will feature beloved venues and experiences from Disney Wish, with special modifications.

Anticipated to weigh around 140,000 gross registered tons, the ship will accommodate 2,500 guests (double occupancy) across 1,250 staterooms, powered by liquefied natural gas for sustainability. Details about inaugural voyages, itineraries, and onboard offerings will be unveiled in due course.

Disney Cruise Line's current fleet sails to iconic destinations worldwide, including the Bahamas, the Caribbean, Europe, Alaska, and more. Plans for year-round cruises from Singapore starting in 2025 are also underway. The fleet includes Disney Magic, Disney Wonder, Disney Dream, Disney Fantasy, Disney Wish, the upcoming Disney Treasure, and Disney Adventure, tailored for the Asian market.
